Chapter 20

Dotty couldn’t wait to get hold of Kylie to find out what her message meant. First, she had to listen to the backlash of how she’d upset Candice.

“The poor girl is not a happy bunny. She was outraged when you suggested that she copied me. Doesn’t she realise she’s doing it?”

“I don’t know. It’s odd.”

“I listened to her moans all through the next session. Even the tutor had to tell her to shut up.”

“Oh, dear. Sorry about that. I was only trying to help. What have you found out about the puppy farming?”

“Well, first of all, I spoke to James to see if he knew anything about his dad’s business interests, other than general farming stuff. I told him of our suspicions after what happened to Milly’s dog.”

“Was that wise?”

“Listen, James doesn’t have a good word to say about his dad after the way he was disowned. His dad told him he won’t be leaving anything to him in his will either.”

“I don’t think James will be worried about that now he’s got his very own Prince Charming.”

“No, James’ only worry is that if his dad is up to no good, then his mum might be implicated.”

“So, what did he tell you?”

“Not a lot. He knows his dad breeds puppies but as he only sees his mum, she isn’t aware of all of Ned’s business dealings. She keeps out of the way. It’s a large farm and they employ people to look after the animals, so his mum doesn’t get involved.”

“So, what have you found out?”

“I’ve been crafty, plying Will with drink last night. I couldn’t tell you earlier because I didn’t want to discuss it in front of James. It’s not that I don’t trust him, but it is his dad we are suspicious of.”

“And what did Will tell you?”

“He didn’t go into detail, but he said things are going on at that farm that would make your toes curl.”

“Such as what?”

“I don’t know. He says he is paid too well to spill the beans on Ned. Apparently, if Ned suspects any of his workers of being disloyal, he doesn’t sack them.”

“What do you mean?”

“Will said they get roughed up. He explained that working for Ned is like joining the Mafia. Once you’re in, there is no way out, you are part of his family.”

“Did he indicate what Ned may be up to?”

“No, but I think it involves animals.”

“Why, what makes you say that?”

“Oh, it was a comment that Will made when he said it’s a good job that he’s not a dog lover.”

“I see. You’re right. We need to investigate this further.”

“Do you have any suggestions about how we can do that?”

“Let me sleep on it. We’ll come up with a plan by Saturday when we meet up at the café.”
